GREENVILLE, SC- The weather tried to wash away the last home game of the season for the Carolina Elite Cobras Thursday night, but it did not stop the Cobras from beating the Atlanta Silverbacks 3-0 at MESA Soccer Complex.
The game got off to a rocky start with the 7 p.m. kickoff being postponed for 45 minutes, but the Cobras came our controlling the game once the game got underway.
Cobras midfilder Savannah McCaskill was able to give the Cobras a 1-0 advantage scoring her first goal of the night in the ninth minute.
"The team worked extremely hard to find Savannah tonight and she did well running into space and finishing once she got close to the net," Cobras Head Coach Sandy Burris said.
The Cobras went into halftime keeping hold of their 1-0 lead over the Silverbacks.
The Cobras came out in the second half holding nothing back against the Silverbacks, pressuring offensively for most of the second half.
That pressure eventually led to another Cobras goal from midfielder Lydia Vandenberg in the 67th minute, giving the Cobras a 2-0 lead over the Silverbacks.
The Cobras tacked on their third and final goal of the night just minutes later in the 73rd minute when McCaskill got her second goal of the evening, leaving the final score 3-0 in favor of the Cobras.
"This was probably the best game we have played as a team the entire season," Burris said.

COBRAS BEAT DUTCH LIONS
Vandenbergh PK Gives Cobras Win
Monday, June 23, 2014
GREENVILLE, SC- The Carolina Elite Cobras (4-1-2) beat the Dayton Dutch Lions (3-6-0) 2-1 Sunday afternoon, leaving the Cobras tied for first place in the Southeastern Conference.
Things were not looking good for the Cobras to start the match after defender Carolyn Warhaftig collided with a Dutch Lion player, injuring her knee and forcing the Cobras to use a substitute in only the 12th minute.
"Losing Carolyn in the 12th minute after already being down a few players to begin with was a rough start, but I think our defensive players really stepped up and adjusted when they had to," Cobras Head Coach Sandy Burris said.
The Cobras were able to bounce back from the injury in the 23rd minute when defender Madeline Brock made a run forward, beating several Dutch Lion defenders and eventually was able to lay the ball back to midfielder Chelsea Drennan who was waiting at the edge of the box. Drennan's shot went hard and low past Dutch Lion goalkeeper Ayanna Parker giving the Cobras the 1-0 lead.
Both the Cobras and the Dutch Lions had opportunites through out the remainder of the first half, but when the halftime whistle blew the Cobras remained in the lead 1-0.
The Cobras were able to tack on another goal shortly after halftime in 46th minute when Dutch Lion defender Michelle Brownlee was called on a hand ball in the box, giving the Cobras a penalty kick. Cobras midfielder Lydia Vandenbergh stepped up to take the penalty, putting it into the side netting past Parker and giving the Cobras the 2-0 lead.
It did not take long though until the Dutch Lions were able to rebound after the goal, scoring in the 53rd minute after forward Gemma Craine scored from a Michaela Powers pass.
But, the one goal for the Dutch Lions was not enough and the Cobras were able to hang on and take the victory 2-1.
"I was happy to get out with a win; they were very aggresive in the second half," Burris said. "We just were able to take advantage of some of the chances we got early in the game and we were able to hold on."
The Cobras will play again Saturday, June 28 away against the Charlotte Eagles at 7 p.m.
